I Love Burro Bar

We went to lunch this weekend with my friend Gloria's family at Burro Bar, which is a Mexican restaurant in the South End. It was busy when we got there, but we'd been able to make a reservation that morning. It was sort of loud from lots of people talking, but it wasn't so loud that it was hard to hear. The restaurant is brightly decorated and colorful, which I like. Our table was a booth on one side and chairs on the other. I sat on the booth side, which felt cozy.
The hostess brought crayons and coloring sheets for all the kids and helped put in an order, so that we could get some food right away. We started with chips and guacamole and salsa. They make their own tortilla chips at the restaurant and they were much better than chips that you buy in a bag from the grocery store. They were warm and a good amount of greasy. They were thicker than packaged chips and much less salty, which I thought made them a lot better. The guacamole looked very pretty with herbs on top. Cilantro was the flavor that I could taste the most. The guacamole comes from the kitchen though, and I had hoped that they would make it at the table so I could watch! The salsa was a teeny bit spicy but not too spicy. It was almost a liquid like gazpacho, and not chunky. It tasted very fresh.

I had a kale salad with apples, pomegranates, carrots, toasted corn nut crumble, cotija, and cheesy whole grain mustard dressing. It also came with pears, but I didn't get those because I don't like them. And I always get my dressing on the side because sometimes restaurants make salads too goopy. The salad was very good. The corn nut crumble was the best part. I had never had corn nuts before, but I really liked them. They added crunch and flavor to the salad.

My sister and our friends had cheese quesadillas. They were served with watermelon slices, sour cream and black beans. The quesadillas were made with white tortillas, and tasted very cheesy and buttery. They weren't very toasted, but were soft and everybody liked them.

My brother ordered the Chorizo De La Casa. It was a tortilla with eggs, sausage and potato. He had it without the chipotle mayo. He liked that he could eat things in different combinations and said that it was awesome.
My dad had the Burro Bowl, which was a bowl with two fried eggs, beef brisket, Mexican fried rice, pork charro beans, Baja crema, chipotle mayo, salsa verde. He liked it overall, but didn't think that the brisket was very flavorful.
Gloria's mom had Huevos Rancheros. I had never heard of that before, but we read about it and I learned that it is a breakfast dish that originated on Mexican farms. There are all sorts of variations, but this one had two fried eggs, roasted corn, queso añejo (which is a Mexican cheese), pork charro beans, salsa ranchero de la casa, and crispy tortillas. Gloria's mom liked it, but thought that there was too much corn.
Overall I really loved Burro Bar and think it's a great place to eat and for families to take kids!
